What causes are you most passionate about?
– Education, financial literacy, criminal justice reform, hunger & poverty.

Who is a real life hero of yours?
– My father is my idol, despite the fact that it may sound cliche. My father, who immigrated from Ecuador in his early twenties with little education, money, or English comprehension, was able to defy the odds and create his own business. For the past 15 years, he has successfully run his own bakery. My father is an example of a risk-taker, entrepreneur, hero.

If you could make one improvement in the world what would it be?
– We need to improve how society treats animals. Animal testing, breed-specific legislation, and overcrowded shelters are all contributing to a situation that cannot be resolved without significant reform. I don’t think this problem has a single solution. The best approach to creating a solid foundation is through education. Give people the knowledge they need to make better decisions.

I’m really passionate about entrepreneurship and community. Giving people the power to build incredible things and at the same time build a future for themselves and those around them is one of the most powerful things we can do. If you could make one improvement in the world what would it be?

I would fix the education system by making it high quality, free and accessible to all regardless of background. This would have enormous 2nd/3rd order consequences for politics, the economy, and innovation.

Who is a real life hero of yours?

At the risk of sounding cliché my mother is an example of a fighter, entrepreneur, hero. What she went through in her life, rising far above what anyone expected of her (her family comes from the poorest state in Brazil and would be considered below the poverty line until her mid-20s), is frankly an example on how to get up and fight another day regardless of the “challenge”.

What ideas or efforts do you think will or have changed the world the most?

This might be a bit too basic, but the concept of the number Zero. Historians recognize it’s been around since the Babylonians but it wasn’t a part of Western thinking until the 12th Century when Fibonacci wrote about it in “Liber Abaci.” Thanks to this inclusion, were we able to advance everything “modern” from algebra to quantum physics and rocket science to the most important: binary code.

What causes are you most passionate about?
Education and Climate. My education provided a passion for learning that elevated me to where I am today. Everyone should have the opportunity to pursue their education and curiosity which is why I volunteer with pencil.org to help NYC youth prepare for interviews, optimize their resume and plan their career path. Surfing Rockaway Beach reminds me constantly of the impact climate change has on ocean life. My wife and I do our small part by volunteering, donating, and dropping compost off every week while walking our “chonky” pitbull Kane.

What ideas or efforts do you think will or have changed the world the most?
AGI (Artificial General Intelligence). The idea that machines will surpass humans in general intelligence. I highly recommend the book “Superintelligence” by Nick Bostrom if you want to learn more about how this concept will impact our lives.

What do you think some of the most pressing problems we face are?
Climate Change full stop. I love the innovation taking place around Space Exploration with Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Richard Branson all vying to get off this planet but I’m certain mankind would be better off if we put a lot of that brainpower, ingenuity, and resources into fixing the climate problems are remarkable planet faces.

Ishika Das

Ishika is a Product Lead for Market Strategy at Oscar Health, a healthcare technology company where she has worked on a range of products and programs since joining the company as an early employee — from serving as the sole product lead on its proprietary claims processing system, to operationalizing and running its joint ventures with Cigna and HealthFirst across Oscar’s entire technology teams, to developing product strategies for its Medicare Advantage line of business.

Prior to joining Oscar, Ishika built data and consumer products at Compass, a real estate technology company. Ishika started her career in financial services — notably at the Raine Group, where she invested and advised tech, media and telecom companies, specializing in digital media, live entertainment and social gaming transactions, and at  Houlihan Lokey, where she was a financial restructuring analyst focusing on the oil & gas and shipping industries.

Ishika graduated from the Wharton School of Business, at the University of Pennsylvania with a B.Sc in Economics (Finance concentration) and a minor in French. She grew up internationally in India, Russia and the United Arab Emirates and is fluent in four languages (English, Hindi, Bengali and French). She enjoys running (has run the NYC marathon!), photography and deepening a mindfulness practice. She currently resides in Brooklyn, New York with her partner and their adopted zoo – dog Peggy and cats, Tyson and Ali.

What causes are you most passionate about?

One of the greatest challenges to human progress is the politicization of social and economic systems to favor a small minority (instead of serving the broader majority). While hierarchical social design has existed since the advent of civilization, the recent, growing inequality in outcomes has a deep, adverse impact to the environment and the human condition writ large. I’m passionate about communities, policies and systems that can reverse this trend, in both big and small ways.

If you could make one improvement in the world what would it be?

I believe that the world would be a more peaceful, unified place if human beings did not act with greed and purely out of self-interest — that is, if we were all at peace with ourselves and each other. Creating opportunities for communities to be exposed to alternative opinions outside of their echo chambers can go a long way in improving our collective empathy.

What do you think some of the most pressing problems we face are?

Climate change and ecological destruction are some of the greatest problems we face today — ones that impact our ability to survive as a planet and species. Our inabilities both to comprehend large-scale, multi-factorial events and to enact long-term policies only make matters worse.  We need to create the correct incentives for governments and corporations to act with society’s future interests at heart.
